UpToDate Adds Dermatology, Psychiatry and General Surgery to Medical Specialties

Additions Bring to 21 the Number of Medical Specialties Covered by the Electronic Clinical Decision Support Resource Serving Healthcare Practitioners and Patients

MEXICO CITY – (March 26, 2013) – Wolters Kluwer Health, a leading global provider of information for healthcare professionals and students, announced today it has added Dermatology to UpToDate®, its evidence-based clinical decision support resource. The change follows the recent additions of Psychiatry and General Surgery, bringing to 21 the number of medical specialties included in an UpToDate subscription.

“Healthcare providers should consider UpToDate as their primary reference source. The wide range of clinical knowledge is extremely useful in practice. From a critical standpoint, UpToDate stands out in terms of accuracy,” said Dr. Juan Manuel Rodriguez Lizola, Quality Manager, Antiguo Hospital Civil de Guadalajara “Fray Antonio Alcalde”, one of a range of hospitals in Mexico utilizing UpToDate. Others include two of the Ministry of Health’s research institutes, El Instituto Nacional de Cancerología and El Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Respiratorias Ismael Cosío Villegas.

Dermatology was added after a three-year collaboration directed by Dr. Jeffrey Callen, Editor-in-Chief of UpToDate in Dermatology. Callen led a team of leading dermatologists to expand and build dermatology content in all major areas — medical, pediatric and dermatologic surgery — making it ideal for researching less common disorders and treatments, pediatric issues, and drug reactions. Physicians in other specialties, including rheumatologists and those specializing in allergy and immunology, will also find UpToDate’s dermatology content indispensable.

Other recent additions to the extensive content available to UpToDate subscribers include Psychiatry and General Surgery. Led by Dr. Peter P. Roy-Byrne and Dr. Murray B. Stein, Co-editors-in-Chief of UpToDate in Psychiatry, a team of leading psychiatrists expanded and built content in psychotic disorders, depressive disorders, bipolar disorders, anxiety disorders, somatoform disorders, eating disorders, impulse control disorders, substance-use disorders and personality disorders.

Editors-in-Chief of the General Surgery content are Raphael E Pollock, MD, Professor and Head of the Division of Surgery of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and David Soybel, MD, Professor of Surgery and Chief of General Surgery for Penn State Hershey Medical Center. They led a team of 19 section editors to develop topics covering all major areas of General Surgery. These include abdominal wall and hernia, bariatric and metabolic, breast, burn, colorectal, endocrine, head and neck, pancreatic and hepatobiliary, plastic and reconstructive, skin and soft tissue, thoracic, trauma, upper GI, and vascular surgery. Also included are sections on minimally invasive surgery, as well as anesthesia and analgesia, general surgical principles and surgical quality and safety.

“UpToDate is focused on developing the breadth and depth of our medical content to ensure clinicians feel equipped to provide the very best care,” said Denise Basow, M.D., Vice President/General Manager and Editor-in-Chief, UpToDate at Wolters Kluwer Health, Clinical Solutions. “The addition of these medical specialties affirms our commitment to providing the most comprehensive, evidence-based recommendations available for treating patients.”

As with all UpToDate content, the new specialties include peer-reviewed, evidence-based recommendations that reflect the latest medical advances and practices from more than 450 leading medical journals.
