Physicians at Grupo Hospitalar Conceição Trust UpToDate for Evidence-Based Answers at the Point of Care

Porte Alegre, Brazil – (March 27, 2013) – Wolters Kluwer Health, a leading global provider of information for healthcare professionals and students, announced today that UpToDate®, its evidence-based clinical decision support resource, has enhanced the quality of patient care at Grupo Hospitalar Conceição (GHC) in Porte Alegre and increased physician satisfaction in its use for effective clinical support and training.

UpToDate is a frequently-updated, evidence-based resource authored by leading medical doctors to help make the right decisions at the point of care. In 2007, GHC was evaluating clinical decision support options and UpToDate was selected not only to improve care for patients but also for training and continuing professional development and medical education.

Hospital management at GHC enthusiastically encouraged adoption of UpToDate and facilitated access by offering a link to UpToDate on every computer to ensure doctors could use it anywhere in the institution, at any time. This, coupled with effective strategies for implementation, led to a consistently steady increase in usage. Clinicians who were familiar with UpToDate immediately started using it and they, in turn, served as a collaborative resource for others who were new to UpToDate.

Today’s widespread use of UpToDate at GHC is also attributed to physicians’ satisfaction with the comprehensive, evidence-based clinical information provided by UpToDate. Doctors routinely consult UpToDate for an array of topics across a wide range of specialties, seeing UpToDate as an essential tool in every department.

Dr. Sérgio Antônio Sirena, Research Coordinator at Escola GHC was originally on the team that selected UpToDate. He commented, "I've been using UpToDate to quickly answer questions that arise in everyday clinical practice. UpToDate has also been a key resource for training activities, seminars and clinical discussions. On the academic side, UpToDate has been the go-to source for clinical research when authoring scientific articles, developing book chapters and recommending further reading to students."

Denise Basow, M.D., Vice President/General Manager and Editor-in-Chief, UpToDate at Wolters Kluwer Health, Clinical Solutions added, “GHC's experience shows how UpToDate substantially benefits clinicians at all levels of experience, from junior doctors and residents to senior doctors. The proactive adoption of UpToDate by GHC management serves as an excellent example of a hospital culture committed to using evidence-based knowledge at the point of care.”
