The Ottawa Hospital Launches UpToDate Anywhere as Mobile-Enabled Clinical Decision Support Resource of Choice

Ottawa, ON – (July 17, 2013) – Wolters Kluwer Health, a leading global provider of information for healthcare professionals and students, announced today that The Ottawa Hospital has launched UpToDate® Anywhere as its clinical decision support resource optimized for the hospital’s leading edge mobile-health strategy. The hospital represents the first UpToDate Anywhere hospital client in Canada.

The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) is a bilingual, multi-campus health-sciences centre that offers comprehensive, high-quality health-care services to the 1.3 million residents of Ottawa and Eastern Ontario. With more than 1,100 beds and an annual budget exceeding $1 billion, TOH is one of the largest teaching and research hospitals in Canada.

Clinicians at TOH have long trusted UpToDate, a clinical decision support resource used to inform diagnostic and treatment decisions at the point of care. By deploying UpToDate Anywhere, TOH provides its doctors with additional access to UpToDate, whether they are on-site, at satellite offices, at home or on the go by using the award-winning UpToDate Mobile App for iOS, Android and Windows.

“Our use of UpToDate Anywhere is a direct outgrowth of our advanced mobility strategy and mission to equip clinicians with the tools they need to answer questions quickly at the point of care,” said TOH Chief Medical Information Officer Glen Geiger, MD. “We are confident that, as the latest tool in our online arsenal, UpToDate will have a significantly positive impact on both our physicians and the patients they treat.”

TOH has been a pioneer in providing mobile access to patient information and medical resources, and continues developing, refining and expanding its mobile strategy for physicians, nurses and other clinical team members. Profiled by Apple in its “iPad in Business” series, TOH equipped thousands of care providers and staff with iPads and other iOS devices. They were among the first to develop a mobile-enabled electronic health record and, in March 2012, TOH became the first hospital in the world to provide mobile physician order entry via an Apple iPad.

“The Ottawa Hospital’s adoption of UpToDate Anywhere as an integral part of its forward-thinking mobility plan helps demonstrate how clinical decision support is evolving,” said Denise Basow, MD, Vice President/General Manager and Editor-in-Chief, UpToDate at Wolters Kluwer Health, Clinical Solutions. “The Ottawa Hospital is recognized in North America for its leadership in patient care, research and education, as well as its commitment to state-of-the-art technology. We are proud to be a partner in their innovative approach to improving medicine at the point of care.”
