The incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) during childhood is considerably lower than that seen in adults; however, VTE is increasingly recognized in the pediatric population as a complication of contemporary health care.

This review summarizes the available information on the incidence, risk factors, clinical manifestations, and diagnosis of VTE in children beyond the neonatal period, excluding VTE in the central nervous system (CNS). Other aspects of VTE are discussed in separate topic reviews:

Treatment, prevention, and outcome of noncerebral VTE in children (see "Venous thrombosis and thromboembolism in children: Treatment, prevention, and outcome")

VTE in the newborn (see "Pathogenesis, clinical features, and diagnosis of thrombosis in the newborn" and "Management of thrombosis in the newborn")

VTE in children with cancer (see "Thromboembolism in children with cancer")
