Dr. Schroth refers her patients to UpToDate to help them be more involved in their own medical care
“UpToDate for Patients helps my patients be informed partners in their own medical care.”
Linda Schroth, MD is one of four doctors in a small family medicine group practice in Higganum, CT. She recently placed UpToDate for Patients posters in the exam rooms to make patients aware that they can access the information resource doctors use and trust. She also uses the UpToDate patient education pads to prescribe information to her patients.
"Writing an information prescription is a handy and practical way to help patients become more familiar with their illnesses and involved in their care," said Dr. Schroth. For example, she recently diagnosed a patient with hypothyroidism. After a discussion of the patient's condition and management options, Dr. Schroth used the patient education pads to refer her to www.uptodate.com/patients so she could learn more about monitoring and treating her hypothyroidism.
"Many of my patients want to and do look up information on the Internet, so it's important that they go to a source that is accurate, reliable, and trusted," said Dr. Schroth. She noted that when patients come in after reading UpToDate topics, they ask really good, informed questions. "This saves me time because I don't have to correct inaccuracies or biases; our conversation can focus on the reality of their condition and treatment options," said Dr. Schroth. "UpToDate for Patients helps my patients be informed partners in their own medical care."
