The activation process for desktop and laptop computer
software installations is different from the process for mobile device
software installations, as described below.
Desktop and laptop computer installations
You will be prompted to activate when you run your UpToDate
software after installing the first release of a new subscription
period. You must activate before you can use your software.
Mobile device installations
As part of the installation process, you must activate your
UpToDate mobile device software when you install the first release of a new
subscription period. The installation program will inform you that you
need to activate and lead you through the steps for doing so.
Activating desktop and laptop computer software installations
When you run your UpToDate software after installing the first
release of a new subscription period, UpToDate automatically displays
the Activation Status page, through which you can activate your
software. You will not be able to use your software until you activate.
After you activate, UpToDate no longer displays the Activation Status
page automatically when you run your software.
Note: You must activate your software on the
computer on which it is installed.

Online activation is fast, easy, safe, and secure, and we do not
collect any personal data. We strongly recommend that you use this
method if your computer has an Internet connection.
To activate your desktop computer software online, click Activate
Online on the Activation Status page.
Using an alternate activation method
If you are unable to activate online, you can activate your
desktop computer software as follows:
On the Activation Status page, click the link for using an
alternate activation method.
On the Alternative Activation Methods page, select one of the
following activation methods:
E-mail — To activate by e-mail, click
the E-mail link.
UpToDate displays a page that instructs you to send us an
e-mail and lists the required information that you must include. We
will process your request and send your Activation Key to you.
After you receive your Activation Key, display the Alternative
Activation Methods page (see Steps 1 and 2, above), enter your
Activation Key in the Activation Key box, and click Submit.
Fax or Mail — To activate by fax or
mail, click the Fax or Mail link.
UpToDate displays a page that instructs you to specify your
contact information, print the page, and send the printout to us. We
will process your request and send your Activation Key to you.
After you receive your Activation Key, display the Alternative
Activation Methods page (see Steps 1 and 2, above), enter your
Activation Key in the Activation Key box, and click Submit.
Phone — To activate by phone, click
the Phone link.
UpToDate displays a page that instructs you to call Customer
Service and lists the required information that you must supply. After
the Customer Service representative provides your Activation Key,
enter the key in the Activation Key box and click Submit.
Note: You must be at the computer on which you
want to activate your software during the call.

To activate your mobile device software online, do the following:
On the Card Reader Selection page, select the drive for the
card reader and click Continue.
If the installation program displays the Initialize Memory Card
for Activation page, follow the instructions on the page to initialize
your memory card.
On the Activation page, type the Product ID (included with
your software package) in the Product ID box and click Activate
Online.
When prompted, enter your UpToDate user name and password
(as supplied by UpToDate) and click OK to
activate your software.
You can then continue with the installation procedure.
Using an alternate activation
method
If you are unable to activate online, you can activate your mobile device
software as follows:
On the Card Reader Selection page, select the drive for the
card reader and click Continue.
