What types of subscriptions are available?


Individual Clinician Subscription — Provides one individual user with unlimited access online, as well as through installation on a desktop or laptop computer and on some mobile devices. AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ or CE contact hours are available.

Individual Trainee Subscription — Provides individual resident, fellow, and medical student users (proof of status required) with unlimited access online, as well as through installation on a desktop or laptop computer and on some mobile devices. AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ or CE contact hours are available.

Stand-alone Workstation Subscription — Provides access to UpToDate on a single, non-networked computer workstation (not a server). Suitable for installation in a library, small department, clinic, or resident lounge where multiple users may share access to the UpToDate program. The Stand-alone Workstation Subscription does not include online or mobile device access, and CME/CE credit is not available.

Site Subscription — Offered to hospitals or hospital systems only, a licensed site subscription allows unlimited facility-wide on-site access to UpToDate online. Annual subscription rates are based on the number of physicians within the UpToDate specialties who will have access to the program. CME/CE credit is available in some cases through integration with an EMR or other secure clinical information system.

Individual Patient Subscription — Provides patients and patient-advocates with short-term, online-only access to UpToDate's professional-level content.

As a clinician, what do I get with my individual subscription to UpToDate?

You will have access to UpToDate online throughout your subscription period. You will also receive software that you can install on a desktop or laptop computer and on some mobile devices. You will receive an updated software release every four months for the duration of your subscription.

Your UpToDate subscription includes comprehensive information in your own specialty, plus in-depth information on all of our other specialties, at no extra charge.

What are the conditions of an individual subscription license?

An individual subscription to UpToDate is for your personal use only. No part of the Licensed Materials may be copied for resale or posted on public bulletin boards, websites, Internet domains, or online chat rooms. You may not sublicense, assign, share, sell, rent, lease, or otherwise transfer your individual right to use the Licensed Materials.

You may print or e-mail individual topics from the most current version of the database. These must amount to an insubstantial portion of the Licensed Materials and only for (1) your personal educational use or (2) teaching healthcare professionals if you include a source reference to UpToDate and its copyright notice. How soon will I have access to UpToDate after I subscribe?

If you order online, you will receive a user name and password that allow immediate access to UpToDate online (except for trainees — see information below). We process all other orders within two business days. You will be able to access UpToDate online immediately after your order is processed.

We send all software packages for desktop or laptop computer and mobile device installations by priority mail and/or airmail.

Trainees: You need to provide proof of status, such as a letter on institutional letterhead from your program director stating that you are a trainee in good standing, or a photocopy of your badge (with expiration date). Please be aware that your order will NOT BE PROCESSED until we receive this proof of status.

Do you have a money-back guarantee?

Absolutely. If you're not completely satisfied with your UpToDate subscription, you can simply cancel within 60 days for a full refund. Please note that this policy applies only for subscriptions of one year or longer.

How do I renew my individual subscription online?

You can renew your individual subscription online through either of the following methods:

  • When logged in to UpToDate online, you can renew through My Account. Click here for further information.
  • When online but not logged in to UpToDate:
    1. Go to www.uptodate.com/renew.
    2. Enter your user name and password.
    3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete your renewal.

All individual clinician subscribers are eligible to use UpToDate on a mobile device.

Will it cost extra to use UpToDate on my mobile device?

No. Use of UpToDate on a mobile device is part of an individual subscription, and there is no additional charge.
