Why UpToDate?

Clinicians Trust Us

More than 700,000 clinicians in 158 countries, including 90% of academic medical centers in the United States, rely on UpToDate® every day to inform diagnostic and treatment decisions at the point of care. This unique level of trust, built over more than 20 years, is achieved because clinicians know they can virtually always find the answer to their question, that answer is evidence-based and thoroughly peer reviewed by world renowned experts, and UpToDate always gives them a recommendation they can act on.

At UpToDate we feel a tremendous responsibility to get things “right,” and that responsibility is reflected in the rigor of our editorial process, our commitment to providing the evidence supporting our recommendations, and our insistence in the transparency of recommendations by actually grading the recommendation, not just the evidence (as occurs in most other decision support resources). Many physicians have described UpToDate as a trusted and respected colleague to whom they can turn for recommendations.

Depth and Breadth of Content

A clinical decision support resource is most valuable when it is used at the point of care. UpToDate topics are viewed more than 18 million times per month, and our 2012 subscriber survey found that clinicians find the answers to their question over 90% of the time. This success reflects the breadth (20+ specialties) and depth of our clinical content (over 10,000 topic reviews, each of which answers multiple clinical questions).

UpToDate Improves Patient Care

More than 30 research studies confirm that physicians frequently change diagnostic and treatment decisions when they use UpToDate, and these changed decisions are associated with improved patient care and hospital performance. One study by researchers at Harvard, published in the Journal of Hospital Medicine in November 2011, found that hospitals using UpToDate experienced shortened hospital stays, fewer deaths and better quality performance than non-UpToDate hospitals. To our knowledge, there have been no other clinical decision support resources that have been associated with improved patient outcomes in peer reviewed studies.
