How do I earn AMA PRA Category 1 Credit or CFPC Mainpro®-M1 Credit?

UpToDate® offers Internet Point of Care CME. Physicians conducting structured searches on clinical topics may claim a half (0.5) AMA PRA Category 1 Credit/CFPC MainPro®-M1 credit for documented completion (either at the point of care or later) of the three-step learning cycle, which is as follows:

  1. Review the original clinical question.
  2. Identify the relevant sources from those consulted.
  3. Describe the application of findings to practice.

For each month for which you want to earn credit, you must complete the credit log by selecting options that describe the application of your findings to practice. You may view and complete your monthly credit logs at any time, either prior to or during the process of submitting credits.

To complete a monthly log, access your CME/CE/CPD credit log, then do the following:

  1. Click on the name of a month.
  2. Select the appropriate option for each search to indicate how you applied the information to practice.
  3. Click Save.

UpToDate is very interested in supporting our subscribers as they work to meet their MOC requirements. We are working to develop software on our end so that UpToDate users can obtain these credits in the future.

How do I view my credit log to see how many credits I have?

As you use UpToDate®, the system automatically creates a monthly log of your clinical questions and topics viewed. The log reflects the current status of your credits or contact hours.

Mobile apps and desktop installs will accumulate credits, but details of these credits are only available online. To view or redeem your credits, you must login to your UpToDate account online via a desktop or laptop computer.

To access your CME/CE/CPD credit log, do one of the following:

  • Click CME or CE on the toolbar (depending on your default setting).
  • Click the Access my available UpToDate CME/CE/CPD credits link in My Account.

For AMA PRA Category 1 Credit or CFPC Mainpro®-M1 Credit, you will see both completed and potential credits. Completed credits reflect the searches for which you have completed the three-step learning cycle. Potential credits are those that can be fully accrued once you verify the application to practice.

I am a nurse. Does use of UpToDate provide nursing CE?

UpToDate is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to award AMA PRA Category 1 Credit and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) to award NP contact hours which may fulfill Continuing Education (CE) requirements for nurses in many States. Please visit Nursing Licensure Requirements for more information.

However, UpToDate is not accredited by American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or any other state or federal nursing authority. Nurses are responsible for confirming with their State’s Board of Nursing that UpToDate may be accepted to fulfill their CE requirements. Nursing Licensing Boards accept only those CE activities which meet their requirements. UpToDate cannot determine if credit earned using UpToDate are relevant to each licensee, therefore UpToDate cannot guarantee acceptance of all credits for all licensees.

I am a Pharmacist. Does use of UpToDate provide pharmacist CE (CME)?

UpToDate is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to award AMA PRA Category 1 Credit which may fulfill Continuing Pharmacy Education (CPE, CE) requirements, wholly or in part, in many States. However, UpToDate is not accredited by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE). Pharmacists should therefore not claim credits earned using UpToDate for maintaining licensure in States that exclusively require ACPE accredited programs. For any questions, pharmacists should check directly with their State’s Board of Pharmacy.

Regardless of State CE requirements, use of UpToDate is widely recognized by pharmacists as an effective method to develop and maintain state-of-art skills in clinical pharmacology and pharmacotherapy and to enhance the quality and impact of their drug therapy recommendations.
