Evidence-based answers at the point-of-care

Course Name: Evidence-based answers at the point-of-care

Background:

Studies have shown that clinical questions arise 11 times during a busy practice day; only about 40% of questions get answered; and answering all questions would change up to 5 management decisions each day. Why don't doctors look up the answers to clinical questions?

  • Their busy schedules don't allow them time.
  • They don't have confidence they'll find an answer with the resources they have.
  • The sheer volume of new medical information is overwhelming.

Test scores indicate that ten to fifteen percent of internists fail the ABIM exam and ten percent of family physicians fail the ABFM recertification exam. Traditional means of answering clinical questions - colleagues, journal articles and textbooks - do not always include best practices or synthesize available evidence for clinical application. Physicians need to know there are tools available to help them answer questions at the point-of-care, and that use of evidence-based tools will increase their knowledge base as they apply what they learn in real time to improve patient care.

Course Description:

Evidence-based answers at the point-of-care is a case-based interactive course that leverages real medical board review questions, an electronic audience response system (ARS), and selected electronic information resources, including UpToDate. Attendees will participate in a "best practices challenge," answering the questions using the anonymous ARS. These questions will then be used to demonstrate how to use a number of point-of-care resources to find evidence to apply to patient care. The course is designed for a one-hour session, but can be expanded as time allows, and may qualify for CME credit.

Educational Objectives:

Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Test their knowledge of current best practices.
  • Identify the frequency of clinical questions that arise in their everyday practice.
  • Understand how electronic resources can be used to get evidence-based answers.

Target Audience:

Primary care physicians and clinicians.

Presenter:

Physician familiar with a variety of point-of-care resources.

UpToDate will provide:

  • Interactive PowerPoint slide presentation.
  • Audience response system and onsite staffing the day of the event.
