and Beyond the Basics — to help clinicians communicate important health
information to their patients.
The Basics
The Basics are short (1-2 page) articles written in plain
language at a 5th-6th grade reading level. They answer the 4 or 5 most
important questions a person might have about a medical condition. These
topics are best for patients who want a general overview. The Basics topics are
currently available only to UpToDate subscribers.
Beyond the Basics
Beyond the Basics articles are 5-10 pages long and include more
detail than The Basics, including links to UpToDate professional topics.
These articles are best for patients who want more in-depth information.
