在美国,每年约诊断出96,830例新发结肠癌[1]。手术切除是针对局部区域性结肠癌的唯一可治愈疗法。患者结局与其就诊时病灶的范围最密切相关(表 1)。1991-2000年报告至美国监测、流行病学和最终结局(Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results, SEER)数据库的119,363例结肠癌患者中,根据诊断时的肿瘤分期[采用旧版2002年美国癌症联合会(American Joint Committee on Cancer, AJCC)的分期标准[2]],相应的5年生存率如下[3]:
