Parathyroid carcinoma is a rare cause of primary hyperparathyroidism, which is usually caused by a parathyroid adenoma and occasionally by primary parathyroid hyperplasia. Other rare causes are parathyroid cyst and ectopic secretion of parathyroid hormone from a nonparathyroid tumor. (See "Pathogenesis and etiology of primary hyperparathyroidism".)

This topic will provide an overview of parathyroid carcinoma. Other aspects of primary hyperparathyroidism are discussed elsewhere.

(See "Primary hyperparathyroidism: Clinical manifestations".)

(See "Primary hyperparathyroidism: Diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and evaluation".)

(See "Primary hyperparathyroidism: Management".)
