INTRODUCTION

The performance of bariatric weight loss surgery is escalating in response to the obesity epidemic, with multiple surgical procedures being available. Bariatric surgical procedures currently performed in the United States include:

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (figure 1)

Vertical banded gastroplasty (figure 2)

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (figure 3)

Sleeve gastrectomy (figure 4)
